It must have been around December when I heard the rumor that Cartier would be presenting a new cheap replica Drive de Cartier at any time, with no date window.
I was a little surprised at first. I couldn't understand how leaving out the date window would justify calling a watch new compared to the base version of the Drive announced a year ago now.
Since the announcement, there has been a lot of discussion about the date window, which is placed on the watch face at 3 o'clock. Complications like this, especially the cut out version of the date window, are more often than not a love or hate affair among collectors.
To my great surprise, the new - and fourth - model in the Drive collection turned out to be a complete turnaround. Except for the lines of the pillow-shaped case and the big blued hands, all other aspects that made the Drive, the Drive, have now been eliminated, replaced with a fresh and hugely minimalist design instead.

Let me get this straight from the start: this new watch should not be viewed as an upgrade or as a refresh. It is, in fact, the dress version of the Drive series and a real new addition to the collection, which now includes five different models from this year.
The original Drive de Cartier models, at least the time alone and the one with a little complication, are meant to be sports watches and are made for any occasion. Reasonably new to luxury Cartier fake watches was the sexy-looking domed crystal that gave the watches an almost vintage look. Both models were equipped with Cartier's own automatic calibers: the 1904-PS MC and the 1904-FU MC. These were based on the automatic 1904MC, Cartier's first automatic caliber.

For the Extra Flat version, the teams from Cartier in Geneva and La Chaud-de-Fonds had to start from scratch. The idea for a new acquisition was a smaller, chic timepiece, a stylish watch that had to have a lot of Cartier DNA without losing the identity of the Drive collection. Not an easy task when you think about it. To meet the requirements, the team first had to start with the inevitability of fresh new case design.
A first test of the watch on the wrist, or even a closer look, will immediately make it clear that this new Drive is smaller than the previous models. And while the case has only been reduced from 40mm to 39mm, the overall effect of the slight differences is genuinely phenomenal. The best part is that they got all this done, and the height of the watch is only 7mm. Hence why this new watch is called the Extra Flat, which is 40% slimmer than the existing Drive watches.

Also gone is the domed crystal and guilloche dial, which were characteristic of the first Drive models. The new flat glass appears to be recessed into the case, just above the sunray and satin-finished dial, which balances well with the twelve Roman hour markers. No date window or third hand here to disturb the serenity of the watch.
To make the watch as flat as possible, the team opted for the mechanical Piaget 430MC timepiece. Cartier has been using this Piaget (430p) timepiece with great success for years. For example, the 2005 version of the Santos Dumont uses the same movement. Carole Forestier-Kasapi (Head of Movement Creation) explained during the presentation that there are no plans to trade this movement for an in-house one, as a transparent back would only add to the thickness of the watch. This is also the reason why she chose to give the top replica Drive de Cartier a closed return.
